Richland, Miss. -- The Richland Economic Development Authority is gearing up for its annual business expo April 28.

The expo highlights Richland's 400 businesses, said Terri Wood, treasurer of the group. The event also gives business owners a chance promote their business and to network with others, she said.

Many residents attend the expo, making it a good opportunity to reach potential customers, she said.

"It lets our citizens know what we have in Richland," she said.

The event will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Richland Community Center. The deadline to reserve a booth is April 26. The cost is $50 for Richland businesses and $75 for those outside the city. There is no charge for REDA members.

Dawn Brewer, administrative assistant at Weyerhauser, said the company participates in the expo to "take an active role as a community member."

"The community has seen us here for some 30 years," she said. "It gives them a chance to see our faces as well as what goes on inside the factory."

Weyerhauser, which makes boxes, has participated in the business expo for the past five years.

"We're not necessarily trying to drum up business, but we have had churches and schools start calling when they need boxes or cardboard for projects," she said.

Charles Hudson calls the expo "good advertising." The assistant manager of Revell Hardware in Richland said his business joined the expo four years ago.

"We wanted to expose ourselves to the community, and this was one way of doing it," he said. "It has well been a benefit to us."

Hudson said the taking part in the expo has helped create good relations between the community and Revell Hardware, which also has locations in Jackson, Pearl, Byram and Clinton.

The deadline to register for the business expo is April 26, but Wood urges businesses to register early because of limited space. For more information, call Wood at (601) 420-1530.
